Living on the windward side of Oahu, whether out jogging Kailua Beach or paddling outrigger canoe in the crystal clear waters of the bay, I am always struck by the statuesque beauty of these small islands. They each have their own personality. It is so fun to paddle out, surf around them or beach the canoe for a few minutes. Sometimes, If you are very lucky, you might catch sight of a monk seal sunning itself. We make Leis for our friends and family from the golden fragrant Puakenikeni flowers. Stringing them together with Love and Aloha.

Years of Outrigger Canoe Paddling in South Maui waters brings you seriously up close and personal with Humpback Whales. What an amazing gift. They are magnificent creatures. So ……. HUGE!!!!! Majestic, powerful and yet gentle. Perhaps its because they are there to give birth and strengthen the offspring. Because they are an Endangered Species, I started doing some research. In this painting for a brief moment, I tried to resurrect the lovely Red I’iwi or Scarlet Honeycreeper. Once very common. Now Endangered.

My latest Obsession…..OCTOPUS!!!!! He’e in Hawaiian. I don’t remember what started it, but let me help you understand why; Incredibly Intelligent  and Curious, Three, yes THREE Hearts, No Bones, so no matter what their size, they can squeeze through anything bigger than their beak, usually tragically short lives; once they mate, lay eggs, hatch, they die. And about the camouflage! If only I could paint a minuscule amount of the changes they can effect in ten seconds! The list goes on…….. Simply LOL Marvelously Complex Creatures

Fortunate to live on Maui for many years, one feels Mother Mauis Embrace. Anue’nue, the Hawaiian name for Rainbows, greet you around every turn in the road, every single day. Runs on the beach are often accompanied by green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles bobbing up every so often to make sure your on pace. There is just no other place like it on earth. I tried to capture the joy of such an existence in this painting, with the turtle almost in flight…

SPECIAL NOTE:

I work on 1.5” canvas with palette knife and lots of texture. I like to put maps on the edges, so framing is optional. Here are some examples:
